Welcome of the SpeakerDear Visitor,

I warmly welcome you on the EU Presidency website of the Hungarian National Assembly, which is dedicated to the Hungarian EU Presidency takes place in the first half of 2011.

This is a historical moment as Hungary holds the rotating EU Presidency for the first time. The execution of the Presidency is mainly governmental competence, but beside the Government, the Hungarian National Assembly has serious organisational and substantive responsibilities, particularly since the Treaty of Lisbon entered into force, which has substantially increased the competences of national parliaments in EU decision-making.

Hungary is facing a difficult but honourable task, but we have not been alone and we are still not alone in the preparation and execution of Presidency. Hungary is supported by Spain and Belgium in the trio, forming together the period throughout 18 months, which is decisive for the future of the whole Union and life of EU citizens.

One month before the Spanish-Belgian-Hungarian trio started its operation, on 1 December 2009 the Treaty of Lisbon entered into force, thus the honourable task paving the way of the Treaty – which determines the operation of the Union – fell to these three countries. It is a difficult, but grateful challenge, since the minor everyday difficulties will sink into oblivion for the successors in few years and later everyone will primarily remember of that the Spanish-Belgian-Hungarian presidency trio led the Union to a new era.

These 18 months are also decisive in other respect as well, since for instance Europe 2020 was adopted in June 2010, the European Semester on coordinating national fiscal policies of Member States is being launched and decision is to be taken on the reform of Common Agricultural Policy and Cohesion Policy. The Hungarian National Assembly, sensing the significance of these issues, will organise a number of meetings with the participation of committees of EU Member States and candidate countries in order to ensure the broadest possible exchange of views and perhaps to finally reach consensus on these decisive issues.

Our website is intending to contribute to the preparation of these meetings, but also provides much more to You, honourable Visitor: it gives an overview on the Hungarian National Assembly and its role in the EU Presidency, its rich link-page helps to open the door to other actors of the Hungarian Presidency and the EU institutions, while last but not least contributes to form positive image of Hungary and Budapest. Dear Visitor, may you be a participant of the meetings organised by us, representative of the press, or simply interested in us, I am certain that you will find interesting and useful information on our website.

I wish you a pleasant browsing!
